Luke Bryan Concert Reviews

Luke Bryan is currently on tour and these are a few recent reviews of the show!

Bayou Country Superfest, Tiger Stadium

Over the years Luke Bryan has played countless nightclubs, honky tonk bars and small town festivals as he practiced his craft and refined his talent. In the past few years he has beceome more of a household name and this was evident as he headlined a night of the Bayou Country Superfest. He told The New York Times recently that it was partly those experiences that shaped him into the sort of modern country performer who two-steps along the formerly thick lines between pop, country and hip hop.

He came out full of energy and excitement with his popular mix of country-pop melodies and a few classic songs that he has loved for many years. Luke Bryan is certainly an entertainer that is full of excitment and a gifted performer that enjoys putting on both an amusing and musically attractive show for the thousands of fans who come to experience a great night of music. He kicked off the show with the party song "That's My Kind Of Night" and it set the mood for what was to come. Luke Bryan likes to sing about drinking, girls, and partying and that is what his legion of fans come to hear. He followed with the songs "Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye", "Rain Is A Good Thing", and "All My Friends Say" which had the crowd singing along to each and every Luke Bryan song.

"Who is feeling frisky tonight, Louisiana?" he asked the bunch. Seemingly, the response to that was Luke Bryan. It requires the friskiness to be owned by a brave and interesting man, but he managed nicely. Luke loves to have fun on stage and he will often shake and move to the music. Certainly, the women in the crowd love to see this as they dance along to the party songs that Luke has become known for. Bryan played up the party antics, expertly snapping open a beer before taking a swig given to him from a bunch of rowdy fans in the front row. He went on the sing the popular song "Country Man" and the crowd loved every second of the hit song. The following songs took place with Luke Bryan at the piano as he performed the George Strait classic "The Chair", "Fancy" by Reba McEntire, and Mel McDaniel's "Louisiana Saturday Night". "Y'all give it up for my group. We have never played any of these tunes together," he declared. "The best thing to do is get in front of 55,000 individuals and play new songs. But this is one we do know very well. It is called 'Do I.'"

Seeing and hearing the banjo, fiddle and steel guitar could only have been better had there been more of them. The delivery of Bryan's solo acoustic guitar performance of "Drink a Beer," a song devoted to his brother and sister that have both passed away, showed the depth of his songwriting. Luke Bryan closed his wonderful 2 hour set with an encore featuring "Country Girl (Shake It for Me)," and needless to say, he did lots of the shaking himself, plus the occasional slow burn hip roll. He motioned for a beer, threw a stagehand the mic and sang the last notes. He popped the top taking a big sip before throwing the can into the happy crowd. This night in Louisiana once again proved that Luke Bryan is one of the best entertainers in Country Music and he is loving every minute of the time he gets to spend with his loyal fans.

Xcel Energy Center - St. Paul, MN

As Hollywood got all dolled up in its tuxedoes and gowns for the Academy Awards on Sunday night. More than 15,000 Minnesotans got ready for a night with a country superstar in their tight jeans, plaid Western shirts and stylish boots as the Luke Bryan That's My Kind of Night Tour hit the sold-out Xcel Energy Center.

To start the show Luke Bryan came up in a burning ring of fire -- atop a black pickup truck, in an all-black outfit, belting out the hit "That's My Kind of Night." They may not be the greatest dance moves by a man in the history of country music. But Bryan, 37, did shake it like a Polaroid picture, and moved like Ricky Martin -- swiveling his hips and shaking his behind for all the women in the crowd. Appearing on a big round stage in the middle of the arena (attached to the main stage by a runway) for more than half the concert, Bryan gave the effect of a concert of the round without being in the round. He delivered all the great songs that the fans came to hear including; "Drunk On You", "Crash My Party", "I Don't Want This Night To End", and "Do I".

The ensuing "Suntan City" turned into a beer-tending session more than a song as Bryan discarded cans of Miller Lite from a Cabela's cooler to fans located close to the stage. A year ago, Cole Swindell, who used to sell T shirts at Luke Bryan concerts, didn't have a record deal. Now he has a No. 1 song, "Chillin' It," a bro-country anthem that was the highlight of his encouraging opening set on Sunday. Lee Brice, the second of two opening acts, couldn't get his voice out of his head but he carried on with bro-country spirit, however. At set's ending, Brice declared: "This has been the greatest night ever. Seriously, y'all."

Luke Bryan brought along the "huge, black, jacked-up truck" mentioned in his million-selling hit "That My Kind of Night." A trapdoor opened on the annular stage and up came a full size pickup, complete with the taillights flashing to the beat and a ring of fire surrounding it. One song, and it was gone. Country music, y'all!

For the next 95 minutes at St. Paul's Xcel Energy Center, Bryan pulled similar goofy, crowd pleasing moves, from the imitation lake dock that appeared for "Drink a Beer" (to tie in with the lyric: "I am gonna sit right here, on the border of this pier") to the seemingly never-ending amount of means he worked "Minnesota" into his tunes. And there really was not anyone in the crowd who didn't get that the 37-year-old Georgia native loves partying, Bryan tossed cans of beer into the audience and hauled an oversized cooler out (and, during the encore, juggled them).

None of it was particularly original with Bryan borrowing heavily from the arena-rock bluster of Kenny Chesney and Garth Brooks. Not that the sold out crowd of more than 15,000 seemed to mind. If anything, Bryan's runaway success -- his "Crash My Party" was last year's largest-selling country album -- comes on the back of some of the genre's most reputable, recognizable themes: drinking beer, shooting firearms, driving your truck, seeing girls dancing, drinking more beer and so forth.
It helps that Bryan is all grins, with an approachability and attraction that manages to draw lovers of both genders on Sunday even if the women outnumbered the men.

He even pulled out the obligatory 10-second cover of Prince's "Purple Rain" and, afterwards in the set, took a stab at the full version of Macklemore's "Can't Hold Us," with the aid of his first opening act, Cole Swindell. His other opener, the bearish Lee Brice, is likely to graduate to headlining standing on his own earlier than later, though he shouts his songs more than he sings them.

The audience stayed with Bryan throughout, even as his songs started to blur together into a beery mess. The massive circular screens atop the stage felt like U2 (or at least Coldplay) quality and gave even the most affordable seats a great view of Bryan's widescreen grin. If Bryan can keep this up, he'll be in the running with Kenny Chesney, Zac Brown Band and Jason Aldean to become the next artist ready to perform for stadium sized crowds.
